Time for some history ! 3D Studio Max or "Uni time"

Hello everyone ! It's been a while since my last post. As I said I will do the second part of the "Time for some history !". So here it is.

Whoever is reading my blog already knows that I started off modelling from Cinema 4D. However after I got accepted to the University I started learning Autodesk 3D Studio Max. At first I hated it. But now I love it ! OK, so here is my first 3D model on 3D Studio Max and my first car model ever:

I did this Mustang while watching a tutorial "Automotive Modelling in 3Ds Max" by Digital-Tutors. This went quite well and I started to get the hang of 3D Studio Max UI and tools. Then, at the very beginning of my Computer Games course at Uni I made this:

This was a fun project to work on. Did it after looking at some of Josh Nizzi's art and a tutorial on Designing Robots. This project was also my last casual 3D modelling project of 2010.

That's because I had so much other stuff to do. For instance I had to model a 64' Aston Mini Cooper for one of my units:

This is not the model I submitted to my lecturer. This is an amped version of it. You can probably see the Giant V-12 engine with a massive Supercharger that is keeping the hood open. The proportions might not be right but at least it looks cool. After I modelled this, some people noticed me and I was invited to work on an independent feature length CG film called "Stina & The Wolf". I saw it as an excellent opportunity to improve my skills, learn something new, meet cool people that share similar interests and gain some valuable stuff for my CV. To this day I am not sorry of joining the team and I am happy I learned a lot of new thing. I might talk more about my role in the team in later posts.

After the new year I had some time during the exam period. So I did this:
This, ladies and gentlemen, is a Combustible Lemon Launcher. You might have heard Cave Johnson talking about Combustible Lemons in the game "Portal 2" by Valve.

The concept for this CLL was made by forte-girl7 .

After my first year in Uni I improved a lot. I started keeping my mesh clean, keeping tidy topology, UVW mapping, texturing and a lot more. Well for now I guess it should be enough. I'll post some pictures of the models I make for the game I am working on and perhaps I will think of any other stuff to show you guys.

Peace out !!

Time for some history ! C4D or "The Past"

Hello everyone ! I decided to write a little about my history as a modeller. I'll post some pictures of my very first models and you will see how I progressed. So lets begin.

Lets begin with the video that made me so interested in 3D !

After seeing this video I downloaded the trial version of Cinema 4D and started playing around. It was confusing at first but fortunately there were tons of C4D websites and forums with free tutorials. One that is worth mentioning the most is  C4D Cafe.

So after getting used to the UI and controls I started doing some modelling.

This is my first model ever. I modelled it using Cinema 4D. This was pretty exciting for me back then.

Doesn't look as good as it looked then but it sure brings back fun memories. Few more models

After a few weeks of playing around and gaining some understanding of how the modelling process works and after a fair few tutorials I started challenging myself by doing more complex things.

This violin for example would be an example of what I accomplished in few months after modelling the spoon. At this point I already had a basic understanding of splines and NURB surfaces. I also had an idea of how materials work though I didn't get into that until my University course.
More pictures:

After more than a year of modelling I decided I wanted to model a character. I began by taking a male model that comes with C4D and "Customized" it. I remember I was really proud of this model though it seems I had no real idea of what I was doing.

This took me some time to finish.

This is the last model I made with Cinema 4D.

Models you saw here are not necessarily my best pieces. These models are like milestones in my path as a modeller. I will continue another day with another part of my history where I will show you some of my works that are done with 3D Studio Max and other software packages. I might also update this post with more pictures since I have tons of them.

Peace out !!

Progress

Hello there ! So I promissed to post a picture of my character for the University course unit. Look below !
OK then. People meet Dwarf ! As you can probably see I made some progress with my environment. I can't tell how excited I am about this project. I plan to have my environment, at least the low poly version, ready by the end of next week. Then I'm going to open a map bakery and bake some normal maps ! I hope I'll be able to do everything in a week or two so that I have some time getting used to UDK.

 That's it for today.

Uni stuff

So I have this unit at uni where I have to produce a 3D character and an environment and then make a short animation with them. So far I've almost finished the character. Still need to fix some textures and complete the rig. However I am too excited about modelling the environment to wait until I'm finished with the character. So here is a very early stage of my environment. Just started blocking it out.

I'll add a screenshot of my character some other day ... To lazy to lift a finger and upload another picture :/

What I'm up to

Hi to whoever reads this. Well like I said in my first post I am a 3D modeler or something. I am currently working on a game and on a cg film. Not huge stuff but good stuff for my CV and portfolio.

This is a video time lapse of a model I did for the film. Did not make a video of texturing it. Hope I will find some time to do that as well.

That's that.

Updates soon...

Wat do ?!

For real. Wat do ? Never did anything like this before ? Where do I start ?  Ok. Maybe I'll just introduce myself for starters.

Hello my name is Rokas and I'm not an alcoholic. In fact I haven't had any alcohol for more than two weeks. Shame ... So. I'm a second year Computer Games student in the UK. I was born and raised in Lithuania. Before you ask where it is, I suggest geography class at school. If it's too late for you to go back to school, use Google or duckduckgo.com. Now that we've got that out of the way, lets continue. So I left my family and most of my friends behind and came to UK where I'll try to pursue a career in film or games industry. I try to specialize in 3D modeling and texturing. You'll be able to see some of my works and stuff in the near future.

Enough about me. You know too much already !!

Peace out !
